The Man I Am Today (2013)

DVD video projection (Duration 8 mins. 57 secs.)

Five men discuss the transformative qualities of the Victorian military uniforms they wear during re-enactments and living history events, and the effects these performances have on audiences. As detailed descriptions of the uniforms and the masculine archetypes they represent combine with poignant, more personal memories of the men’s role-models and influences, contrasting attitudes towards gender and sexual identity are revealed. Performances past and present are evoked with the rhythmic juxtaposition of deserted pastoral landscapes and garrisons alongside the men’s mourning of lost values, whilst a space remains for the viewer to elaborate through their own personal experience.

Filming took place at various locations in the South East of England, some of which have military connections.
